International Workshop on Key Challenges in the Conceptualization and Measurement of Democratic Erosion
On 12 June, Dr. Angelo Vito Panaro organized the workshop “Democracy and Its Erosion: Conceptualization and Measurement Challenges.” The event took place at the European University Institute and brought together more than 20 scholars to discuss current theoretical and methodological challenges in the study of democratic erosion.

Since 2015, Dr. Panaro has served as Co-Chair of the Standing Group on Political Regimes. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Italian Political Science Association and provided a valuable venue for both established researchers and early-career scholars to exchange ideas on the conceptualization and measurement of democratic backsliding and regime change dynamics. The keynote lecture by Professor Elias Dinas focused on post-authoritarian norms and the ideological legacy of dictatorships, reflecting on how historical experiences of authoritarian rule continue to shape contemporary political attitudes, institutional trust, and democratic resilience.
