Call for Application: Transnational Repression
Transnational repression—the cross-border intimidation and persecution of diaspora communities, exiled journalists, human rights defenders, and political dissidents—poses an increasing challenge from both a human rights and legal perspective. Affected individuals are increasingly confronted with surveillance, threats, the misuse of international law enforcement tools (such as Interpol Red Notices), or even physical violence in their host countries—including Germany. Such practices not only violate fundamental human rights, but also raise questions regarding the human rights protection obligations of host states.
Against this backdrop, the German Institute for Human Rights is examining Germany’s legal and political obligations in addressing transnational repression. The goal is to identify potential courses of action for state and other relevant actors to effectively protect those affected and to ensure compliance with international human rights standards.
To this end, the Institute is seeking students interested in contributing to research on transnational repression with the aim of co-authoring a joint report. A detailed description of the Call for Applications can be found here.
