On October 11, 2023, Prof. Dr. Katrin Kinzelbach gave the inaugural talk in a new seminar series on Global Challenges to Democracy, organized by the Ash Center at Harvard Kennedy School in cooperation with the Carr Center for Human Rights. Her talk was entitled “Academic Freedom: Empirical Data on a Contested Idea”. A recording can be viewed here. The seminar series delves into the various challenges, both internal and external, that stand in the way of building more accountable, responsive, and capable democracy. Kinzelbach presented the latest version of the Academic Freedom Index and stressed that democracy needs academic freedom – and academic freedom needs democracy.
