In the article ‘China’s search for partners with shared worldviews: expanding the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization family”’ published in Asian Affairs, Dr Eva Seiwert investigates how the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) – a regional organization co-founded by China and Russia in 2001 – has enlarged its ‘circle of friends’ through membership expansion and cooperation with other regional and international organization, arguing that these practices help the People’s Republic of China gain support for its normative views and arguments on the international level.

The paper is based on Eva’s previous doctoral research at Freie Universität Berlin, where she examined China’s use of the SCO to shape global norms. It draws on official SCO and PRC government documents, Chinese academic literature, and interview data gathered in Beijing and Shanghai in 2018.
