Prof. Dr. Stefan Fröhlich

Stefan Fröhlich became Professor for International Relations and Political Economy at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2003, additionally he has been teaching at the Collège d’Europe in Bruges, the College of Europe in Natolin (Warsaw) and the Center for European Integration Studies (Zentrum für Europäische Integrationsforschung) in Bonn for many years. His main areas of research include questions of global order, the foreign (economic) and security policies of Germany, Europe and the USA, transatlantic relations and International Political Economy.

Professor Fröhlich studied Political Science, Economics, and English and Spanish Studies in Bonn, Paris, Philadelphia and Washington. He graduated 1985 from the university of Bonn, obtaining his PhD there in 1989 and his habilitation (= postdoctoral degree) in the field of political science in 1996.

Following his work as director of the postgraduate “European Studies Program” at the Center for European Integration Studies in Bonn, he taught as visiting professor in cities such as in Antwerp, Budapest, London, Milan, Moscow, Boston, Tübingen, Vienna, Innsbruck and Zürich. Additionally, he has lectured and researched in Washington D.C. several times, 2002-2003 as visiting professor at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the John Hopkins-University, 2007-2008 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and 2016-2017 at the Transatlantic Academy of the German Marshall Fund.

Professor Fröhlich is author of various academic books and journal articles, such as ”New Perspectives on Transatlantic Relations. Multidisciplinary Approaches“ (2021), ”The end of Self-Bondage. German Foreign Policy in a world without leadership“ (2021), “Das Ende der Selbstfesselung: Deutsche Außenpolitik in einer Welt ohne Führung“ (2019), ”East Asia’s Security Architecture and the Role of the United States“ (2017), ”Die Europäische Union als globaler Akteur. Eine Einführung“ (2014), and “Future Perspectives for Transatlantic Relations“ (2012). He has been a well-known expert and commentator for the domestic as well as international media for several years.

Additionally, he is a member of several commitees, such as the German Atlantic Society (Deutsche Atlantische Gesellschaft), the Center for European Integration Studies Bonn (Zentrum für Europäische Integrationsforschung Bonn), the German Society for Internatinal Politics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik), the German Society for Political Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Politikwissenschaft), the working group European Integration (Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration), and the Institute for European Politics (Institut für europäische Politik).
